What is Sunnah?

Sunnah (Arabic: سنة) is an Arabic word that means “tradition” or “custom.” Al Sunnah attar is a Muslim term that refers to the Prophet’s way of life. Sunnites strive to emulate his words, deeds, and teachings. The Sunnah in Islam is known to encompass what was added to the Messenger of Allah in terms of his sayings, actions, and determinations. It is considered one of the divisions of divine revelation, following the Qur’an, as mentioned in the 3rd and 4th verses of Surah An-Najm:

وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَى* إِن هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىْ

“Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed.”

This means that the Prophet only speaks what is inspired by him and not from his own desires. The Sunnah in Islam has a close relationship with the Quran, as it serves to clarify the teachings of the Quran in various aspects. It holds great importance, particularly in explaining general shari’ah rulings, such as the manner of prayer, the number of Rakat (units) associated with it, and its timings.

Al Sunnah attar, when translated into English, refers to how our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) lived. The Sunnah in Islam encompasses everything that our Prophet Muhammad did, including his manner of eating, drinking, and sleeping, how he interacted with his wives and all his actions throughout his life. It encompasses his words and silence, his travels and places of residence.

We have gained knowledge about all these aspects from the books of Sunnah in Islam and through the hadith narrations written by individuals who took great care in preserving and transmitting the Prophet’s actions and teachings to us.

Once we understand the Quran and the Sunnah, it leads us to explore the relationship between these two and Ruqyah. What is Ruqyah? In sha Allah, we will share more about Ruqyah tomorrow.
